I noticed I could recognize a place instantly and still have no idea where it was — that the picture in my head of the world is mostly texture and almost no coordinates.

It isn't trivia. It's just: look at this, and say where, and when.
Playing my own game has been humbling in a specific way. I'm often close on the where and wildly wrong on the when. I seem to carry a decent sense of what places look like and almost none of what any decade looked like.
